Botox and fillers are two things that can cause a bit of confusion. What’s the real difference between the two and which one should you get in order to achieve the appearance you’re looking for? These are questions that get asked a lot in our Palm Beach Medspa which is what we’re here to help you with today! Let’s dive in.

What is Botox?

First up is Botox. What is it? And why exactly is it so popular?

Botox is an injectable that works to relax the muscles and inhibit their movement. It’s injected into the face in different areas strategically to help smooth out existing lines. As the muscles are unable to move, they’re also unable to create further wrinkles which is why this treatment is so effective.

What to expect

Going in for a Botox treatment usually starts with a consultation. Your practitioner will ask you questions to learn about your medical history as well as what you would like to achieve in your appointment. They will commonly take a “before” photo you can use to compare to your results afterwards. They may also give you an ice pack to help with numbing before you get started.

Once you’ve discussed where you will be getting the Botox, your practitioner will disinfect your skin and then begin to do the injections using a tiny needle. The whole process is relatively quick and pain-free with little downtime. You won’t want to do any strenuous activity for a few hours following your appointment, but can generally continue on with your day as usual.

Some patients may want to apply ice to the area for a few minutes.

What are Fillers?

Filler on the other hand is a type of substance that’s injected into the skin in order to add volume. Fillers are most commonly made of hyaluronic acid which is what helps to bring the volume back into your skin.

As the volume is added, it helps to plump up the skin. It can also fill out fine lines and sagging skin in the process. You would likely want to get fillers if you were faced with volume loss or folds in the face.

Filler is great for bringing structure back into the face. Particularly in areas like the lips and cheeks. It’s also possible to define certain features on the face such as the chin, nose, jawline, or under eye area.

What to expect

When you go for your fillers appointment, you’ll usually start with a consultation just like with your Botox appointment. Once your practitioner has learned about what you would like to achieve and made their recommendations they’ll begin with a series of injections.

The location of those injections will of course depend on where you would like to receive the filler. However, you can expect some very small and mild pain followed by minimal bruising or swelling. It’s possible for a topical anesthetic to be applied before you get the filler in order to help take away the pain.

Once the treatment is complete, you’ll see results almost instantly! Just be aware that there could be some minor swelling. This will settle down within a few days to provide you with more natural looking volume in the face.

After that, your results are likely to last anywhere from nine months to a whole year!

Which One is Right for You?

When choosing between Botox and fillers, it’s important to understand how the two treatments are different. Botox is usually best for those who want to minimize or get rid of deeper lines that appear on the face. Fillers on the other hand are best for those who want to fix volume loss or folds that show up on their face as they age.

The main similarity between the two treatments is you’ll get plumper and smoother looking skin as a result. Something that’s important to consider when deciding between the two is what you’re best able to commit to. With Botox you can always add more but you can’t remove it. So, it’s best to start small and build up your use of it.

With fillers it’s actually possible to dissolve them. So, if you end up feeling like you’ve over done it or like you want it injected in a different area, it’s totally possible! Dissolving is done using hyaluronidase to break down the hyaluronic acid that was previously injected.

Are Botox and Fillers Safe?

One common question around Botox and fillers is whether or not they’re safe. We don’t blame you for wanting to be sure before you give either one a try.

Botox and fillers are nothing to fear/ They are both completely safe as long as they’re done by a professional. Check to make sure your practitioner is properly certified and they have plenty of experience in performing injections before you go ahead and book with them.

If you go with someone who has experience and knows what they’re doing you won’t run into any of the misconceptions that often go along with Botox and fillers. AKA: Botox will make you look frozen and fillers will look puffy or unnatural.

It’s totally possible to achieve a natural look without having to worry about either of those things. Just be sure to do your research and go with someone you know you can trust.
